Application procedure
For what reason can I request a refund of the THM semester ticket?
Prerequisites for a refund of the THM semester ticket are that you are enrolled at the THM and have paid the semester fee in full. If this applies to you, you have 8 possible reasons to apply for a semester ticket refund. You can find this under the question: What do I have to submit?
When can I apply for a refund of the THM semester ticket?
The deadline for submitting your refund request is always one month after the beginning of the semester for which you are requesting a refund (i.e. always 01.05. or 01.11.).
Any applications or documentation submitted after this time cannot be accepted due to our contracts with the transportation associations.
What do I need to submit?
The documents to be submitted differ depending on the reason for the application. Below are the documents to be submitted sorted by application reason:
1. study-related stay abroad
A study-related stay abroad of at least three months during the lecture period
– Proof from the university abroad of the exact duration (exact dates with start and end date) of the stay, at least 3 months in the semester of application, incl. Stamp and signature of the university abroad (mandatory). Certificates from THM or Erasmus are not sufficient.
– Certificate of enrollment for the semester of application with semester fee
– Scan of the validated student ID card
2. study-related internship
A study-related internship
Internship (compulsory internship, BPP, project phase, etc.) outside the area of validity of the semester ticket, with a duration of at least three months in the semester of application (in the case of dual studies, the employment contract with the partner company does not count as a study-related internship for the purposes of reimbursement)
– Internship contract for at least 3 months within the semester of application with place of work, period and signature of both parties, a recognizable reference as a study-related internship (
compulsory internship, BPP, project phase, etc.) is mandatory
– Rental contract of an apartment outside the area of validity of the semester ticket, at least 3 months within the semester of application with place of residence, period and signature of both parties
If residing with parents: Current certificate of registration (not older than 3 months)
– Certificate of enrollment for the semester of application with semester fee
– Scan of the validated student ID card
3. severe disability
A severely disabled person with travel authorization mark G
– Front and back of the severely disabled person’s ID card, supplementary sheet to the severely disabled person’s ID card and current token (of the semester of application)
– Certificate of enrollment for the semester of application with semester fee
– Scan of the validated student ID card
4. final semester
Final semester: If you no longer have any attendance events at THM and your place of residence is outside the area of validity of the semester ticket for at least 3 months during the lecture period of the semester of application
– Proof from the departmental secretariat that all attendance events and all attendance examinations (except colloquium) have been passed (including signature and stamp of the departmental secretariat). Face-to-face events that take place digitally due to the pandemic count as face-to-face events and do not entitle to a refund of the ticket!
– Proof from the department secretary’s office that the thesis has been registered for the semester of application.
– Rental agreement of the apartment outside the semester ticket area (with place, period and signature of both parties),
If residing with parents: Current certificate of registration (not older than 3 months)

7. second listeners
Second students (only at the university with the cheaper semester fee if the second university also provides the RMV-NVV semester ticket. No Deutschlandticket!)

– Certificate of enrolment for the semester of application at the second university (semester fee must be stated on the certificate, alternatively a bank statement/other proof can also be attached showing the amount and payment of the semester fee. The THM certificate of enrollment with semester amount, name, address provides orientation. Combine everything in one PDF.)

How and where do I submit the THM semester ticket refund application?
You can only submit the request online via the AStA refund website at: Refund Request. You can only access this page from the THM network (THM-WLAN or THM-VPN).
What do I get reimbursed?
If your THM semester ticket refund request is approved, you will be refunded the full amount of the THM semester ticket. All information about the breakdown of the semester fee can be found on our AStA website.
When are the applications processed?
The applications are processed by our employees. Due to the large number of applications, the processing and review by the Executive Board, as well as the final transfer, usually take approximately five weeks after the end of the application period. There is no prior examination of the applications.
Application reasons
I am doing a voluntary internship, does application reason 2 also apply to me?
No. The reason “study-related internship” really only applies to curricular internships, such as professional internships, engineering internships, project phases, or similar.
Does the job ticket also count as a reason for reimbursement?
No. Explicitly only the Landes-Ticket-Hessen is valid as a reason for a refund. Other annual tickets with similar or the same validity (period), such as the job ticket, training ticket or similar, do not apply.
Does a diagnosis need to be on my certificate?
No, of course not. This is not even permissible under data protection law. Nevertheless, the certificate must clearly show that you cannot/could not use the public transport for at least 3 months in the semester of application due to medical reasons. We reserve the right to reject the application if this is not clear from the certificate. As a negative example “X cannot ride a bus”, “the use of bus & train was not reasonable for X”, positive example: “X could not use public transport in the period from Y to Z for medical reasons “.
I do not use my ticket, can I get it refunded?
No. The semester ticket is a solidarity ticket. This means that each student pays a small contribution so that everyone benefits. Thanks to the secure contribution of many students, we can use public transport more cheaply than anyone else. Therefore, it is not possible to cancel the semester ticket. Car ownership, bicycle riders or Corona semesters do not play a role.
I study dual. Does this count as a mandatory internship?
Unfortunately no. A contract within the scope of dual studies with a partner company does not count as a compulsory internship for the purposes of semester ticket reimbursements.
Can I request a refund of the THM semester ticket due to other reasons?
No. These reasons were contractually agreed with the transport associations. We may not allow a refund on the occasion of any other reason.
My second university has the Deutschlandticket as a semester ticket. Can I apply for a refund?
No. At least not with us. By contract, we are only allowed to refund if the other university offers the same ticket. However, a refund may be possible at the other university.
Blocking of the semester ticket
Can I validate my semester ticket at all semester ticket printers?
Yes. You can use all semester ticket printers of the THM at all locations. No matter which location you study at.
My student ID card was again printed with the semester ticket. What now?
If you have already received an email that your ticket has been blocked, please contact rueckerstattung[at]asta.thm.de. Otherwise, please wait until we have blocked your ticket. We will inform you by e-mail.
What does a properly validated student ID card look like?
In order to fully validate your student ID card, it must
a) come out of the semester ticket printer without the semester ticket imprint
b) with the end date of the semester of application
. Only then is your semester ticket properly validated.
I still have the old date on my student ID anyway. Can I just not reprint it?
No, that is not possible. It is mandatory that we have the end date of the semester of application on your student ID. This is the only way we can verify that you really do not have a semester ticket imprint on your ID. Otherwise, you could also send us a scan from last semester.
Can I send my student ID card to you and you print it for me?
No, you can’t for several reasons. Once we do not have the capacity to print all the badges. In addition, the ID cards are usually not picked up again and sit with us for semesters. Lastly, IDs are lost due to a postal mailing. Annoying for us and you. If you are not in the vicinity of your place of study, it is best to send the ID card to friends, families or fellow students in the vicinity.
I’m on a semester abroad and can’t get my ID card printed at the machines. What now?
Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications, we are unable to do so. You don’t have to put your ID in the machine personally. For example, friends or family can do this for you.
General questions
Can you check my application beforehand to make sure I have submitted everything correctly?
No. Unfortunately, with hundreds of applications each semester, we can’t do that. We as AStA are also only volunteers. We try to support you as good as possible via FAQ, e-mail and phone. However, we cannot carry out a preliminary examination.
Where can I find my certificate of study?
Certificate of enrolment for the semester of application with semester contribution (no certificate of study progress or BAföG certificate)
You can find the certificate of enrolment in the E-Campus under “My studies” => “Student Services” => “Notifications” => “General”
Can I just not pay the semester fee when I re-register?
No. We do not recommend this to anyone if you do not want to be exmatriculated immediately. The THM first collects all semester fees and then distributes them to the appropriate offices (Studentenwerk, AStA, administration) a few months later. Therefore, a refund of the fees is only possible after the fact. If you have not paid the semester fee in full, please contact the Office of Student Affairs immediately.
The deadline has expired. Can I submit a refund request retroactive to the next semester?
No. Retroactive reimbursement is only possible on the basis of proven illness for a maximum of one semester. All other requests for retroactive reimbursement will not be processed and will be denied.
